Cell Phone Purchase Guide

To own a cell or mobile phone (telefone celular) used to be a dream of most people not long ago. But as technology evolved and with the introduction of new players in the market, they became available with an affordable price range.

These days, cell phones (telefone celular) can be found from different manufacturers and even the cheapest of them boast features such as FM radio, camera and MMS capabilities. Amid the wide-range of models available to the customers in the market, it is often difficult to make a perfect choice.

Although design and looks of mobile phones (telefone celular) are factors that may influence one to make a purchase, the following are some important considerations that should be taken into account while buying a new device.

1 - Contrary to what most people think, it is the calling plan that is more important than the cell phone itself (telefone celular). You may get a host of attractive features with the device but unless its calling plan is suitable for you, it is not worth buying it.

One important thing about a calling plan is the regional or nationwide service coverage. Imagine if you are going to extensively use your cell phone (telefone celular) only within a particular region, then there is no point in getting a device having nationwide coverage. This can save you a substantial amount of money.

Also, choose the right cell phone plan for your calling habits. If you are the one who literally spend a fortune on their phone bills, then go for the services that offer saving schemes. Otherwise, you can opt for services that help you control your expenses on cell phones (telefone celular).

2 - Think if you really need a camera phone. How often will you be using it in your day to day life ? Besides, most online service plan providers offer a free handset with their service plan. Some even offer a cash-back on the cell phone (telefone celular) purchase. So, explore your options before buying a device.

3 - Don`t go by the look of the cell phones (telefone celular). Eventually, it becomes outdated over the times. A bulky hand-set is difficult to carry around. So pick one that fits your size.

4 - Pick a wireless carrier first then select the phone you want. Inquire your friends, relatives, and acquaintances if they are satisfied with the phone service they are using. Since, you will be using it in the same neighborhood they are the ones who can offer you the best advice on this.

5 - Online purchase is always a good idea as you can get the accurate descriptions in writing before you buy. Shopping online allows you to know the plain truth about each phone (telefone celular) and service. On the contrary, staffs of cell phone kiosks are paid on a commission basis and they always try to con the buyers into buying their phones at a higher rate. So you can never be sure about these buys.

Cell Phones Batteries

The world used to be a very different place. When accidents happened away from home, victims had no way of calling for help. If a driver broke down on the road, he or she would have to either go to a stranger's house to use the phone, or wait for a good Samaritan to stop and offer assistance. Thanks to cell phones, it's now easier than ever to stay in touch, and stay safe.

Cell Phone Batteries

The world used to be a very different place. When accidents happened away from home, victims had no way of calling for help. If a driver broke down on the road, he or she would have to either go to a stranger's house to use the phone, or wait for a good Samaritan to stop and offer assistance. Thanks to cell phones, it's now easier than ever to stay in touch, and stay safe.

This is not to say that cell phone users don't have emergencies. They constantly face the danger of running out of batteries. While this may seem fairly unimportant, a dead cell phone is of no use when your care breaks down. And it can certainly be a problem if the cell phone battery dies in the middle of an important conversation.

There are differences in the types of cellular phone batteries, and in the phones that use them. An analog phone, for instance, will typically go through batteries faster than digital models.

Capacity
It is possible to buy high capacity cell phone batteries that provide more talk time and stand by time between calls. High capacity batteries do weigh a little more, so they might not be the best choice for those wanting a featherweight cell phone.

Value
You can now buy cell phones for a fraction of what they used to cost, but they can still involve a sizeable investment. You might have to save up to buy the cell phone you want, and you will need to budget your monthly income to accommodate the user fees and call charges. Another expense that should be considered is the cost of better cell phone batteries. Most phones come with a basic battery, but you might want to upgrade to a higher capacity. So, as with any purchase, the cell phone battery that costs less may not be the best quality options. Basically, you get what you're paying for. If you find a high-capacity battery at a super-low price, make sure it's not restored rather than brand new. Restored cellular phone batteries are usually made with old components, and don't work as well as new ones. If you're offered a battery at an incredibly cheap price, it's probably restored.

Warranty
Cell phone batteries do not come cheap, so you need to be sure that your investment is protected. A warranty is important because, like any manufactured product, some cellular phone batteries may not work properly, or last as long as expected. If your battery fails to meet the manufacturer's promise within the specified amount of time, they will usually offer a new battery in place of the faulty one.

Here are a few tips to help ensure that your cell phone and battery enjoy a long and happy life together:

1. When charging your battery for the first time, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

2. If you have to remove the battery from your phone, make sure that it doesn't come in contact with metal objects such as keys or pocket change. This can keep the battery from working properly.

3. Cell phone batteries are prone to damage from extreme temperatures. Don't leave your phone in the car, or anywhere it will be exposed to excessively hot or cold temperatures.

4. Try not to drop your cell phone. Dropping your phone, especially on a hard surface, can irreversibly damage the phone and the cell phone battery.

5. Different phones, and cell phone batteries, need different chargers. Make sure that you're buying the right charger.

6. Your cell phone will most likely last you a year or two, or even more. Don't skimp on quality; choose a cell phone that will meet your needs now, and has the lasting reliability you need to keep you talking for years to come.

7. You can get more life from your cell phone, even when you're done using it. There are many community services, such as women's shelters, that will happily accept your cell phone donation. Think of other ways that you can reuse or recycle your cell phone and accessories.

Cell phone batteries can sometimes set you back as much as an entire new phone will cost. For this reason, you need to extend the life of your battery as much as possible. If you do find yourself in the position of buying a new battery, make sure you get the one that offers best performance and a solid warranty.

Texting Changing Communication Conversation

The average 13 to 17 year sends and receives over 100 text messages a day. A recent PEW study has found that in general people who text (often the youngsters) prefer to text over making a phone call. It does save people time for example, rather than having to make a phone call where you could diverge into small talk when all you want to say is that you will be at the meeting. Yet, the study also says that because texting is so simple and convenient people tend to do it often in their spare time, when they could otherwise be basking in quiet reflection. Understanding the pervasiveness of texting in our young culture, it makes me wonder how texting is or could be changing the global business world, education, and citizenship.

Sad News...Drop.io Removed Voice Recording Feature, but There Are Some Good Alternatives!

I was incredibly sad to read that as of Oct 1st, Drop.io has removed all voice recording on their site. Drop.io was by far my favorite site for easy podcasting, video and image storing and that has now come to an end. However, I would like to pose some nice FREE alternatives to Drop.io below:

Google Voice

I am a big fan of Google Voice for their recording feature. First when you create an account, you can get a local area code number (so that students could call from a land line). In addition you can set up the number so it goes right to a unique greeting in voicemail. All the messages are stored in a private space on Google Voice as MP3 files.

iPadio
This is a free podcasting site and can be used internationally. The phone number is not toll-free but you can use cell phones. The bad news is that you have to register your cell phone number so you can only use a couple different numbers at a time to connect with the site.

Yodio
This a free audio recording/podcasting site. Your phone does not have to be registered with the site to use the site (which is nice) and you can create one teacher account for all the student's to record into.

Tumblr
The Tumblr blog allows anyone to post images, video, text and audio directly from their basic cell phone to a Tumblr blog. The only thing I don't like is that I can only have one phone number associated with the blog at a time.

Geograffiti
Leave an audio voicemark from you cell phone in a specific location on a Google map.

Google Map Mashup
Post audio from a cell phone on a specific location on a Google map.

UhaveAudio
You can record up to 60 seconds at a time with the phone to web recorder and it is a toll free number.

Cinchcast
You do not have to be registered with the site to make a podcast. You simply call in to the Cinchcast number and record your podcast that is then posted to a space in Cinchcast.

Phonecasting
Once you create an account, you can use a phone (any phone) to call in and make a podcast. The podcasts are housed on the Phonecasting site but do have ways to post on other sites or download the files.

Find Cell Phone Owner Without Any Hassles

It is unfortunate that there are millions of people who do not know how to find cell phone owner. They thought that there is no way to do this because there is no public directory for such things. Although they are really not readily accessible, this does not mean that they are entirely restricted. With the right resources, there is still a way so that you can trace a particular call.

It is actually very easy to find cell phone owner if you have an internet connection. With this, the only thing that you will have to do is to search for a dependable site that has a reverse look up tool. Fortunately, there are hundreds of these that you can choose from. The only problem is that not all of them are as effective as they claim to be.

It is then necessary for you to be decisive in choosing the right site. To do so, you have to stay away from any kind of free services. If you want to find cell phone owner, this is something that you should always avoid. In several instances, they are actually very troublesome and incapable. If you are unlucky, you have already browsed through the entire site and you have not yet accessed the tool.

And worse, they are also very dangerous to use. As you already know, most of these free portals are very vulnerable to internet troubles. For one second, you are already exposed to tons of errors, virus, and spyware.

These are the main reasons why it is much better if you are going to look for a fee-based reverse look up tool. This kind of service is actually very dependable because their databases are extensive and comprehensive. Some of the information that they can provide you includes the name, address, date of birth, civil status, and a whole lot more.

They are also much more dependable because you can expect that they have covered the entire country. Even those who have just got a connection are surely enlisted.

The only problem is that they are not that cheap. But if you really want to find cell phone owner, then you must realize that this should not be your top concern.

It is just fortunate that some of them offer some discount privileges. So if you want to find cell phone owner, this is something that you might want to try out.

Start your reverse phone number lookup immediately to discover everything you need. Also, read another of popular article on reverse cell phone lookup.

Cellular phone wallpapers

In the modern society we live in, cellular phone is already a necessity; no longer valid is the notion that this is merely a luxurious toy. For minors, however, cellular phone usage is very popular as a dress up gadget. Although, the parents think of it is a necessary communication for them to be able to check their children wherever there are. Although they never foresee this boom some years back, manufacturers are quick to flood the marketplace with functional and high-tech cellular phones. Various beneficial features of cellular phones are not available in a landline telephone; this is what can make cellular phones outpace landline telephony. For those who want to dress up their cellular phones, you may also find cellular phone useful. Manufacturers and computer experts introduce the possibility of giving your phone personality by introducing cellular phone wallpapers.

If you want cellular phone wallpapers, getting one from the internet is very easy. You may also transfer images as cellular phone wallpaper from Cellular phone to another cellular phone. Even the pictures shot from your own cellular phone can be your cellular phone wallpaper. Additionally, this modern technology also allows a picture taken from a digital camera to function as your cellular wallpaper you may just need to upload the image to your phone. You may even add texts to the pictures to add distinctness to your cellular phone wallpaper. Cellular phone wallpapers are merely to add beauty and personality to your cellular phone. However, if your cellular phone does not support uploading cellular phone wallpapers, do not despair, this does not mean you will not get the benefits of owning a cellular phone. Additionally, cellular phones even without cellular phone wallpapers may have its own personality; personalized ring tones may do the job of giving your phone personality as well. Having no cellular phone wallpaper does not say you have an inferior cellular phone. Anyway, the basic features of cellular phone like sending and receiving calls do not require personality or cellular phone wallpapers. Even sending and receiving text messages do not require cellular phone wallpapers. Functionality does not necessitate cellular phone wallpapers; their use is only to dress up your phone and for the purpose of flaunting your cellular phones high technology features, nothing more.

Finally, keep in mind that intelligent cellular phone usage include keeping in mind cellular phone etiquette. Cellular phone etiquette do not just give your cellular phone personality, cellular phone etiquette exhibits your personality, the users personality is more important that your phone having personality. Even if your phone do not include such high technology and innovative features, if you can turn off your phone during meetings and avoid having to annoy the other person in front of you, you are exhibiting a personally that is intrinsic in you.

If you exhibit cellular phone etiquette, even without cellular phone wallpapers, you will get all the benefits of this modern day gadget. You may even get the respect from other users, if you respect them they will not use their phone unethically that may annoy you. It is a two-way traffic, if you exhibit telephone etiquette, the people around you will do the same. Moreover, you do not need cellular phone wallpapers to gain respect from exhibiting telephone etiquette.

Geograffiti's focus on K-8 Education

A while back I posted about a web2.0 tool that couples with cell phones called Geograffiti. One of the concerns with the tool is that you had to be at least 13 years of age to use the tool. However, Geograffiti has now lifted that ban and is encouraging educators in K-12 classroom to consider using their free and innovative tool. Geograffiti couples with ANY phone that can make a phone call (Yay! No Smartphone required, but it is not a toll free number so one should use a cell phone). It allows someone to make a phone call, speak, and have their voice instantly appear on a map (at Geograffiti on the Internet) from the location where they called in. This is an excellent and easy to use tool. Teachers should note that the voicemarks left on the map are PUBLIC, so the teacher should talk with students about digital footprints, appropriateness and the permanent record of the Internet before using this resource.

Here are a fe ideas of how to use Geograffiti in the K-12 classroom:
1) Center Time (K-3)
Students can work on fluency, oral presentation skills, reading, creating an argument, reasoning, inquiry, questioning, by calling in to Geograffiti.
2) Homework, Field Trips, Spring Break
Students can work with their parents over spring break or summer break and leave voicemarks about their experiences, vacations, and what they learned over the break. Students on a field trip could record their observations (such as a trip to the zoo or a science museum).
3) Language Study
Students learning a new language can call in voicemarks and practice their new language skills
4) Social Studies
Students can ask others (friends and family) to call in from different parts of the country to give their perspective on local, national, and international social and cultural issues.
5) Oral Histories
Students could document oral or local histories by conducting interviews that would be placed on the map.
6) Real time Math
Students could call in to Geograffiti when they recognize that they are doing algebra, geometry or physics in their real life, they could describe the situation and put it into mathematical terms.

Leasing Your Property For A Cell Phone Tower

Have you been approached by a wireless carrier company about putting a cell phone tower up on your property? If you are considering leasing your property out for this reason, there are some things that you need to know about what goes on when negotiations take place and when offers to land owners come through. Your goals as a land owner include maximizing your guaranteed revenue from the deal and minimize your obligations at the same time. The following are some of the things you need to keep in mind for these deals to achieve your goals when you negotiate a contract for a cell phone tower with a vertical real estate company or wireless carrier.

The first thing you need to consider is the location and the topography of your land. A wireless carrier is going to hold an investigation of your land to determine how easy it would be to put a tower up. Most of the time, if a site is relatively flat with few natural barriers that is about 2,500 square feet in area that is easily accessible it would be considered suitable.

There are many local ordinances that are common for people to be aware of to legally erect any type of a tower. Before you are even permitted to put a tower up on your property, you need to make sure you know what is required by way of ordinances. Many municipalities require that you get a variance granted or even an exception granted before a lease is signed and before construction begins. However, if you are going to need any type of special approval for things to go through, the lease agreement needs to have the carrier be responsible for getting all of the necessary permits.

You can assume that your cell phone tower lease will last for 20 to 25 years, as is the average length of time for these types of contracts. Some of them consist of five year installments, in between which different terms can be negotiated if necessary. It is not unheard of to request that rent payments increase over time. The amount of rent that is to be paid to a land owner varies a lot from one site to another. Usually people can earn between an average of $700 to up to $2000 per month from these agreements. What determines the value of the payments is the size of the property, the demand for construction of a tower in the area, if any alternative locations are available or not, and if there are any potential alternative uses for that property. Some landowners make even more rent by negotiating co locators with a cell phone tower lease, which is when more than one company uses a single tower.

Teenagers and young adults no longer talk they text!

An interesting phenomena has occurred over the last decade. According to a new article from the Washington Post, with the rise of text messaging among teenagers and young adults has come a demise of talking on the phone. The preference of texting over talking is not limited to teenagers, may adults in their 20's and 30's also prefer to text message. According to Nielsen, the national average monthly voice minutes have gone from 1,200 to 900 from 2008 to 2010. And amongst teenagers and young adults (18 to 24) the monthly average went from 600 messages a month in 2008 two years ago to more than 1,400 in 2010. The cost of text messaging has also declined over the past few years, according to Nielsen, the average customer in the US now pays about 1 penny per text message, thus making it a very accessible form of communication.

I think this information is relevant to K-12 education and teachers. Knowing that the preferred form of communication is quickly changing from a phone call to text message informs educators that schools should be taking full advantage of that form of communication. While some schools are stating to use Text Message Alert systems (I like the free system of http://txtblaster.com), and a few educators are now doing some integrating of text messaging into their core curricula (such as this English teacher who has his students texting poetry ), many are still shying away from this new literacy (even dismissing it as a negative form of communication). Knowing that text messaging is fast becoming the #1 form of communication reminds me that it will also be an important literacy for the 21st century job force.

Classic Cell Phone Form Factors

Over the years, cell phones have changed their features as well as form factors. We look at the most successful form factors in recent times.

Cell phones have changed a lot since the past few years in all aspects, right from the features to the form factor. When the cell phone was first launched,it was a clumsy candy shaped clunker which put off many people. Today, there are several form factors that you can choose from. We take a look at the famous form factors and which lifestyle it would suit.

Candy:

The candy form factor cell phones are definitely the oldest, and yet are a formidable piece in the market. What makes the candy form factor work is that it is rugged and can be used by almost anybody in a jiffy. Also, with the enhancement in form and design, the candy form factor has had several makeovers and today is as beautiful and elegant as the most stylish form factor in cell phones.

Swivel Form Factor:

The swivel form factor was a short-lived fashion that died along with the Sony Walkman phone. In the swivel form factor, the display and the keypad were joint at a circular moving hinge, which allowed the screen part of the cell phone to make a 180 degrees turn. However, the swivel form factor cell phones from Sony have to be recognized as the ones that gave everyone the assurance that even the most delicate looking form factor is actually rugged and strong and wouldn't break during everyday wear and tear. Who can forget the 'kat kat kat' noise when we unraveled the Sony W580i?

Clam shape Form Factor:

The clam shaped form factor was basically a design where the screen part and the keypad part of the cell phone were joined together at the hinge, and the cell phone could be opened and shut like a door. The clam shape form factor was a great hit with women, with its elegant curves and general circular body. However, Motorola revolutionized the clam shaped cell phone market with their Motorola Razr series, which was supposed to be the slimmest phone in the market in those times.

Push Pull Form Factor:

With emerging technologies and changing times, mobile users wished for a larger screen. Back when touch screen cell phones were still at blueprint level, this gave rise to the push and pull form factor cell phones. Basically, the push pull form factor had the keypad and the display lying on top of each other, and the user had to push the display in a vertical manner to access the keypad.

These are just some of the successful form factors in the mobile market.

Teenager Ethan Davids describes how essential his phone is to him

I recently read an article written by a 17 year old high school student. The article focused on why the teenager believes cell phones are essential tools for learning. Below are a few excerpts from the article

"As a student who has experienced some very rowdy and distracting classes, I know that mobile phones can cause huge distractions for not only students, but teachers as well. I am also aware that mobile phones can be a danger to the school environment; however I believe they can still have their benefits in the classroom."

"An argument I have never understood is that youngsters have become too reliant on their mobiles. Nowadays mobile phones can be as useful to people as a pencil and paper, and I have never come across an argument that adults have become too reliant on those!"

The author, Ethan, makes an excellent point at the end of the article, and a point that many teachers who have allowed cell phone use in learning seem to echo, which is that once cell phones are allowed to be out in the open in schools, rather than banned, then teachers can control who, what, where and how the cell phones are used. Here is his quote,

"Eventually I hope mobile phones will be looked upon in a much more reasonable way and take a more important role in education. After all, there’s only so much fun you can have with editing teachers’ faces!"

Send Group Text, Email, And Audio Phone Messages to Students or Parents With One Click for Free!

I recently came across the site SendGM, which is set up to send mass group messages (and receive replies) to cell phones (both text and audio) as well as email accounts at the same time! It is an incredibly easy site to use. Teachers can sign up for a free account, add their contact's preferences (e.g. text, phone call, or email), and then schedule a mass message to be sent at a particular time, and select if they want the recipients to reply or respond to the message. All responses are collected in the teacher's SendGM account!

This is an excellent resource for administrators to send out mass messages to parents or community members using their preferred tool (call, email, text). This is also a perfect resource for teacher's to send out mass messages to parents and/or students. Some examples would include homework reminders, short homework quizzes, polling questions, or other class-related announcements. Under the free plan one account can have up to 25 contacts. If teachers or administrators need to have more contacts they can pay a $79 a year for 100 contacts or 149 a year for 250 contacts (there are more plans as well). This is by far one of the best messaging services I have come across. I really like that it sends messages to the recipients preferred form of communication (and you don't have to send 3 separate messages).

Does banning cell phones in school cause more problems than integrating them?

"Thomas" a student who read my blog, posted this comment:

"The whole having to hide the cell phone is really why so many students are not able to pay attention. If we were allowed our cell phones as we work, we would pay a lot more attention, since we don't have to keep glancing down at the cell phone we are currently hiding under a table. I am able to avoid the whole messaging thing during school, but if they allowed it i have the feeling my grades would go higher, and my learning would improve"

What are your thoughts? Do you think that by not allowing cell phones in the classroom it causes more issues with distraction than by allowing them?

Cell Phone Plans: Pay as you go or Contract?

long des. Are you wondering whether you should go in for a contract plan or a pay as you go? Keep these tips in mind before deciding. When cell phones were first introduced, they were too expensive for everyone to afford. Most people would be turned off by the cost of the mobile device, while some others would be turned off by the monthly bills that they would incur. However, as the demand for portable communication increased, mobile phone service providers were forced to bring down their prices - which they did by implementing various aspects on their product. One such implementation was the segregation of cell phone accounts into pay as you and contract.

As the name suggests, Pay as you go accounts are those where the user pays only for the minutes that they use, and are not eligible for a monthly bill. All they have to do is to sign up for an account with the mobile phone service provider and they are good to go. A contractual phone plan is where the user is eligible to pay a monthly bill, and is charged a service charge. There are several advantages and disadvantages of both kinds of plans, and if you are wondering which type of plan you should go with, you would have to keep some aspects in mind.

Maybe the biggest advantage of the contract plan, sometimes also known as the post paid plan is the amount that one pays per minute. This amount is quite low as compared to the amount that one has to pay when they have signed up for pay as you go plan. Of course, there is a service charge fee that one has to pay which is additional to the charges one pays for the call, but a lot can be trimmed out from that fee.

Another advantage of the contract plan is the features and services that one would find with the post paid plan. Even today, some mobile service providers do not provide internet services on prepaid phones, or charge a very heavy amount as compared to the charges that one would pay on a post paid account.

With a contract plan, you also end up paying a lot less on the extra features and services that you might sign up with your mobile service provider. Ringtones, themes, call back tunes, etc, everything will be charged less if you are on a postpaid connection.

This is not to say that a prepaid mobile plan is completely useless. A prepaid mobile plan is useful when you are not exactly sure whether you would be using a mobile, or whether it would be feasible for you to use the prepaid mobile phone. Also, the prepaid mobile phone gives you the freedom to try and check various mobile phone service providers and then decide which would be the best mobile phone service provider for you.

Also, prepaid mobile phones comes in handy if you are travelling out of station for a while, and do not wish to invest in a post paid mobile connection and yet need to remain in contact with your friends and family back home.

Therefore, if you are deciding whether to look for a prepaid connection or a postpaid connection, make sure that you keep these concepts in mind. These are just some of the different ways in which you can change the look of your cell phone and customize it. Looking for cheap cell phones? We have a great range.

Latest PEW Study on Cell Phones and Teens

The most recent PEW study on Teens and Cell Phones conducted by Amanda Lenhart has uncovered some interesting (although not surprising) data. Below are a few of the highlights (quoted from the document itself):
  • Cell phones help bridge the digital divide: Teens from low-income households, particularly African-Americans, are much more likely than other teens to go online using a cell phone.
  • Most schools treat the phone as a disruptive force that must be managed and often excluded from the school and the classroom.
  • For parents, teens' attachment to their phones is an area of conflict and regulation.
  • Girls more fully embrace most aspects of cell phone-based communication.
  • One in three teens sends more than 100 text messages a day, or 3000 texts a month.
  • One in three (34%) texting teens ages 16-17 say they have texted while driving. That translates into 26% of all American teens ages 16-17.
  • 4% of teens say they have sent a sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude image of themselves to someone via text message.
  • 15% of teens say they have received a sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude image of someone they know by text.

New Research on Student's and Cell Phone Use

The annual Speak Up Report (Download Speak Up Press Release 2009) has emerged with some interesting data sourrounding mobile devices. The results are excellent news for teachers and schools considering mobile devices in learning! Below are a few of the findings from the report.

Among high school students
  • 85 percent report having an iPod
  • 70 percent have a laptop or netbook
  • 30 percent have smart phones

For the first time since 2003, when asked to identify the major obstacle to prevent use of technology in school, students in grades 6–12 said “I cannot use my own cell phone, smart phone or Mp3 player in school.” Previously, the top response was “school filters and firewalls.”

11% of teachers and 16% of parents dismiss mobile devices as having no positive impact on learning. (This means that overwhelmingly parents and teachers agree that mobile devices can have a beneficial impact on learning!!!)

67% of teachers think students will be distracted and more than half are concerned that not all students will have access

In The Three Screen Report just released by Nielsen, it was found that...

"Active mobile video users grew by 57% from 2008 to 2009, from 11.2 million to 17.6 million. Much of this increase can be linked to the strong growth of smartphones in the marketplace."

The age bracket watching the most videos on mobile devices is 12-17!

Students Can Participate in The National Voting Process and Text or Email their Reps with Visible Vote!

I recently came across a free mobile application called Visible Vote. From the website you can download it to your cell phone (NOTE: it does not work with all phones yet). Visible Vote gives live updates on votes happening in Congress, and tells how your local representatives are voting on different bills. In addition, it allows you to vote and "have your say". Finally, you can text or email your local representative via your cell phone with Visible Vote (they do all the work for you!). It is a fun and easy way for social studies students to get involved in the democratic process inside and outside of the classroom!

Finding The Cellular Phone Deal That Works For You

We have all - at one time or another - experience of trying to decipher and understand phone bill. Extra charges, hidden costs, and unexplained overages impressed us all regularly. But when all fixed phones, we had to worry about, our frustration was at least reduced. But now, with the advent and significant use of mobile phones, we have another account to decipher. And if you are not thoroughly educated about the plan, you pay for, you can easily overcome the billing process. Paying a reasonable price for using a mobile phone - and understanding what it means - you need to find a solution for mobile phone, you can live sa pay with confidence.

Fortunately, because the mobile phone companies compete for our business, availability of mobile phones business, which works for our particular situation, can be found around every corner. Hard work comes with the research needed to find and compare different solutions, because it relates to your specific application. But if you are persistent and aggressive in learning the subtleties of each plan, then you have a clear advantage in finding a solution for mobile phone, which will ultimately save money.

Firstly, you must provide some general rules, the standard for most industries. Mobile phone deal that is common to most mobile phone companies are making free calls across the network, and in conversation, or from someone who uses a mobile phone in the same network should be free. In addition, most mobile phone companies offering free calls to specific friends and family as part of a mobile phone deal, you only need to determine which specific numbers that are in contact with regularly.

But the most important part of the solution to mobile phone - in an effort to save the most amount of money, it is possible - using minutes. You must be absolutely clear about what type of mobile phone users, so you can choose a mobile phone deal that will work in your favor. You will pay minutes in both directions, so if you use your mobile phone a lot, you should look at the higher minute plans and neglect rather than using your credit overages. Most mobile phone companies offer the same type of roll-over plan, where you can take any minutes that are unused during one month, and take them with you next month.

Also be sure to understand the taxes and other charges which may arise as part of their monthly mobile phone deal. These various charges can really add up over a period of time.

Finally, a mobile phone that will work the best deal for you is to understand. Nobody likes feeling that they are used to understand all the fees mobile phone bill, so you can be sure that you get a mobile phone deal that makes sense.

New Study: Texting Helps Children Learn to Spell.

I know there are lots of questions and concerns around whether text messaging is hurting literacy learning (especially spelling and grammar). In a brand new study in the U.K., it was found that text messaging actually helped children develop "phonological awareness" which is needed to learn how to correct spellings. Thus helping children learn how to spell. By texting often, it allows children to practice spelling on a daily basis. The kids who text more often (especially those who use textism or abbreviations such as "plz" or "4ever"), showed higher scores on spelling exams.

The study was authored by Coventry University psychology Profs. Beverly Plester and Clare Wood. The following sums up the two major findings:
1) "The proportions of textisms that kids used in their sentence translations was positively linked to verbal reasoning; the more textspeak kids used, the higher their test scores"
2) "The younger the age at which the kids had received mobile phones, the better their ability to read words and identify patterns of sound in speech."

Finding The Best Family Cell Phone Plan

Mobile phones are not just for adults, has ... With an estimated 16 million teens, is a pre-adolescent children own a mobile phone, cell selection plan for mom, dad, child, and now is a real nightmare. Plan and coverage that was good for dad may not be the mother or teen, or vice versa. With almost endless possibilities and options airtime, and the browser reports the time, many families found themselves holding a different program and services for each person. Fortunately, mobile providers are seeing the problem and offer solutions with plans for family packages. These plans were met and exceeded, for the convenient and affordable plans.

Family coverage plans are a good choice for many families, because most providers offer a plan that gives each family member with their own phone number. Family members plan are able to communicate with each other (cell phones) as long as they want, without using their plans regular airtime, it also allows members of one family shared phone minutes, text messages and browser time. Making headache from overage and monitoring of minutes and text messages the past. If family members have a lower cost of calls or messages, may be transferred automatically under the plan, which applies to other members. Family plans usually offer the comfort of one law and coverage requests for service, rather than each member individually and the necessity to use children and young people may need co-signatory. Another advantage of selecting a family plan is to reduce the cost of purchasing mobile phones and accessories. Most mobile providers offer package deals on a number of phones at a reduced rate or even free when you subscribe to a specific contract.

Almost every mobile provider is a family plan, but they differ by several minutes, text messaging, browser, time, price, number of permitted lines, and they can be used in minutes (peak versus night), without penalty.

SouthernLINC Wireless' Family Plan is a Family Reunion offers three different plans. Each plan allows unlimited member-in-the airtime, unlimited long distance plan within minutes, and caller identification. SouthernLINC Wireless offers two basic plans to choose, and that includes the first number, then each additional phone line and add-on plan and the fee attached. The number of add-on, or additional lines is limited to three (in the family living at the same address). All SouthernLINC Wireless' Family Reunion plans are dependent on two-year period.

They offer free mobile-to-mobile calls to any phone Verizon Wireless, not just members of your family plan, no long distances in the United States or Puerto Rico, night and weekend free minutes within the plan guidelines 9:01 pm to 5:59 am in weekdays and 12:00 to 11:59 am Saturday Sunday to all their family plans. They then offer three different coverage plans to choose from: Basic, Select and Premium, each beginning with two lines, then the next add-on fee for a telephone line attached to the plan. The basic plan offers pay as you go minutes, texts and web browser time 700 minutes, at any time for members plan to share. Select plan offers unlimited text, picture and instant messaging, pay for the use of web browsing, and 700 minutes for the members plan to share. Premium Plan offers unlimited text, picture, instant messaging, as well as the browser, unlimited access to all members of the plan, as well as 700 minutes anytime to share. With Verizon Wireless, anytime minutes are used only when calling landline phones or other mobile phone companies, because they have unlimited mobile to Verizon Wireless mobile phone. This is a great choice if you have many family members and friends that have Verizon. This is one of the important things to consider, ask to speak with people regularly, what they plan. T-Mobile is known for its My Faves plan, and have added My Faves for the family as well. This allows any number of My Faves family plan to select five favorite numbers to get unlimited call too. If you select this plan, you get automatic free mobile to mobile to every member of your family plan only if you are in your "Faves". My Faves benefit plan that you can choose the number of other cellular carriers, and even landlines. This plan offers the flexibility to stay within minutes of their plans easily, if they are organized and know to whom you talk to most on a regular basis. My Faves for the family offers four different plans, with a slightly higher monthly premium than the basic family schedule, but with the same rules. The plan is designed for beginners two rows and each additional line, up to three, the additional monthly fee. Like AT & T, text reader and time can be purchased as additional features for each phone on the other charges.

When you need to offer a mobile phone for 2 to 5 people, usually outweigh the pluses minuses when selecting a family plan. However, research and knowledge of their families specific cellular needs is very important. Make sure to choose a plan that will enable all family members adequate time and sufficient transmission of short text messages, to avoid overage charges and penalties that reduce the bargain you thought you were getting.

SCVNGR: Cell Phone Scavenger Hunt Builder!

Thank you to Jeffrey Branzburg for pointing me towards a resource called SCVNGR. In SCVNGR you can participate in or create your own mobile scavenger hunts. The great aspect of this application is that you can use it with basic text messaging (no GPS or smartphone required) OR you can use it with an iPhone! Most of the scavenger hunt type applications online only use smartphones, so it is fantastic to come across one that is more accessible (since over 60% of cell phone users still have basic phones). It is very easy to create your own SMS scavenger hunts. SCVNGR using a WYSIWYG template system to set it up. Once you set it up, students can start the game themselves OR the teacher can start the game for all the students by sending a mass text message. The hunt can be anywhere! Museums, around the city, in the school, non-fiction, fiction...etc. The hunt can also be timed or not. In addition, the hunt clues can be mixed differently for each student or group of students so that they do not arrive in the same place at the same time! In addition, when you finish creating your scavenger hunt you get a handy down-loadable handout for the students with easy instruction on how to participate in your unique game (see the one I made below)! Wow! That is a great time-savor for me. No need to make a how-to tutorial! In addition, you can include pictures in the hunt and grade the pictures via the SCVNGR website! The only negative of this resource is that there is a small cost to create your own hunt (they use credits for each game). However, they do have special fees for universities (so my guess is that a school could negotiate a very small fee). There is no cost for students to play (of course they should know their text messaging plans).

Classroom Integration Ideas
Downtime Play
When students finish a test or quiz, there is usually some downtime for some of them. They could participate in or create their own mobile scavenger hunt (for example in an English class students could answer clues about the upcoming novel or in a science class they could try to answer clues about the upcoming science unit while in their seats waiting for the other students to finish).

Spring Break (or other school breaks)
Doing mobile scavenger hunts around the city (or at local museums) might be a nice way to keep students connected to the classroom learning goals while they are on break.

Student Create Their Own
Students could research local history or science phenomenon and then create a scavenger hunt for their classmates.
