Getting Good Deals In Unlocked Cell Phones

You just don't realize that something happens even on your treasured thing called cell phone. Does locked cell phone ever give a ring? But no, this is not that sort of lock in the keypad that is very simple to remove. This is about the carrier lock in your cell phone, otherwise known as a SIM lock or subsidy lock. So when does this occur and what should you do? Let's first understand some technicalities on a cell phone system...

CDMA and GSM are two major communication systems used for cell phones. CDMA is a coded response system that binds a phone and its user together to a specific system and to a specific number. CDMA is prevailing in the United States.

GSM, which stands for the Global System for Mobile Communication, is the usual standard in over 200 other countries in the World and is prevailing in the United States. GSM cell phone uses a SIM card to communicate with a particular network. The network provider has the ability to lock the phone so that it will not respond to a SIM card from an alternate provider. Network providers do this apparently for competitive purposes, but many have complained against this unfair pattern. When the cell phone is purchased by an individual, he should have the ability to change the SIM card and use the unit on any network that he prefers to use. This provides him the authority to use the same phone when traveling, specifically in foreign countries without paying expensive roaming charges.

We're done with understanding how a locked cell phone occurs, so what to do after it happens? There are basically three ways and each of them demand excruciating amount of time to know your phone more and its system, search for help over the Net and then make call... you get the drift. So here's a better solution.

If you are still in the process of buying a cell phone, prevention is better than cure. While it is conceivable to unlock a cell phone, different persons choose to buy unlocked cell phones. Yes, you have that choice! The truth of the matter's that there is tremendous competition between the various mobile phone service providers. Thus, phone companies are most anxious to lock you into using their service and this is the purpose for locking them. When you own an unlocked phone, you have the freedom to choose your own service - the stuff you need and the stuff that you just want.

GSM phones are easier to unlock compared to CDMA phones. But then again, in either case, it is better to purchase an unlocked mobile phone than buying a phone and go through the dilemma of unlocking it later. So let's make the equation simple from hereon, buying unlocked phones is the only way to go. And before you take out cash from your pocket, ask the seller and make sure that they truly understand what it is you are asking of them. Once you have your unlocked phone, it is an easy matter to determine if it is truly unlocked. All you have to do is test it and the phone will inform on its status. Should it be unlocked you are capable of using it to connect to whatever service you desire to use.

Should cell phones be allowed during school exams?

Thanks to Lindseybp on Twitter, I learned about an interesting article from eSchoolnews, Digital debate: Prepare kids for exams or life? 'Open-Book Exam' 21st century-style: Educators begin to ponder if students should be allowed to use digital devices to take test. The article explores an Australian educator who allows her students to use cell phones and Internet during their exams. Here is a short excerpt from the article that I found interesting and worth discussion!

"But paper and pencil are technologies, just as computers and phones are. They are just a bit older," he said. "And just as paper allows us to offload some of the cognitive load involved in challenging problems onto a medium--[when was the last time you] tried to solve a calculus problem in your head alone?--so do computers and communication technologies; they allow us to offload even more cognitive tasks onto our physical and social environment. Arguably, that's the only way mankind is able to achieve the highly complex tasks we need to achieve today."

He added: "The fact is, we are increasingly making technology part of the teaching and learning situation--but we are not keeping up in aligning assessment sufficiently."

That results in two negative outcomes, Reimann said. First, students notice the discrepancy and don't see the point of the technology, the assessment, or both; and second, educators are underestimating what students know and can do, because students are being assessed in a manner that does not take into account the nature of 21st-century learning--they're being cut off from the resources and tools they are familiar with."

I think this is a fantastic idea! The 21st Century professional world does not ask workers to create, innovate, collaborate, or produce without the assistance of the Internet and mobile devices. So why can't we design assessment that can engage students in using these tools AND evaluate their content understanding??? Why must we say, "put everything away" when taking a test? Why can't we say, "take out all your tools"? Isn't that what we do in the real world? Provide the necessary technical tools to help develop the best outcome or solution?

Do you think cell phones should be allowed during school exams? Take the Poll!

Do Your Kids Have a Cell Phone?

I came across a recent iReport on CNN asking people to voice or text their opinion on giving their own kids a cell phone. Some interesting reports were submitted. Below are some of the highlights:

1) While most parents seem to think safety was the number 1 reason for giving their kids a cell phone, they also voiced concern over those rather "large" cell phone bills that would come in each month (one had a 500 dollar bill!).

2) Many families have unlimited text messaging but very limited calling, therefore the primary communication is via text to save on calling minutes.

3) Some parents who wanted their kids to have cell phones, bought them the pay-as-you-go plans or the restricted phones such as Tic Talk or FireFly in order to have a lot of control over the phones and plans.

4) A few parents posted that they felt giving their children cell phones encouraged responsibility such as their kids having after-school jobs to pay for their plans (or extra features they would like), and having their kids for any overcharges.

5) A few parents did not agree with giving their children cell phones, citing "not responsible" enough to handle the expensive devices as a main reason.

What is your opinion? Does your child have a cell phone? If so, what age did they get their first ell phone. What was your reason for giving them a cell phone? Take the poll!

Rocketron...Listen To News On Your Phone...On Demand

If you call 408.907.2323, you can hear the latest news anywhere, anyplace, at anytime. This is a resource called Rocketron. You do not have to create an online account to use the resource, just call the number. Once you call, you can set up your account or just listen to the latest news. The entire service is voice activated, so you ask for the news you would like to hear such as "political news" or "sports". You can also ask for "main menu" at anytime to get a list of all the news feeds. In the past I have used Jott (Jott Feeds) for the ability to listen to news over my cell phone, this is a more convenient option since I do not have to create an account in Jott or set up the feeds myself, Rocketron does this for me.

Learning Connections
Assistive for VI students
Immediately I thought of visually impaired students. This would be an easy way for them to access news feeds on-demand and to learn about current events.

Current Events
Students in a social studies or business class could listen to their current events on-the-go (since we know students prefer to learn anytime, anywhere, and anyplace). While waiting at the bus stop, or in line for food, they could listen to national, business, or political news and be ready for a current events discussion the next class day. Additonally, they learn how to use their cell phone to get important and pressing news and information.

Cell Phones Prepaid - Is This The Right Plan For You?

Cell phones prepaid can sometimes be the best plan for people if they find themselves in certain situations. This article is written to help you decide if cell phones prepaid plans are suitable for you.

With cell phones being such a huge item; it seems as though everyone has one today. They are great for emergencies and keeping in touch with family and friends. But what do you do when you find yourself paying high monthly bills and you rarely use your phone? There are all kinds of options available for cell phones prepaid plans that will enable anyone to keep their cell phones activated without paying high monthly bills. If you have children or college bound kids on your home these plans may work out best for you. Yes we all want to provide our children with a cell phone; after all what if an emergency arises.

We want them to be able to get in contact with us or the required personnel. However if you have any kids then you know that sometimes giving them a phone can be a bad thing. They will use all the minutes in no time and can sometimes go over the alloted monthly allowed phone minutes. If this happens then you know how expensive it can be.

I personally found this out when I gave my kids a cell phone for their birthday since they were leaving for college. I got the phone for free and assumed that 500 minutes would be enough. So I paid around $50 a month. I specifically told them to use the phone only for emergencies and as long as they did not go over the allotted minutes; I did not care which of their friends they called.

Well when I got the next bill I was shocked to admit it but the phone bill was way up into the hundreds. Needless to say I took away their phone priviledges and ended up switching to a cell phones prepaid plan. This enables anyone to have a phone and talk as much as you want. Once the minutes run out; then you can upload the phone with more airtime. So now I upload their phone with airtime every month and if they run out; they are without a phone. It works great for me and it has taught my kids how to be more responsible with who they talk to and how long they stay on the phone.

Besides it is so easy to reload the phone; you can do it online, over the phone or with a prepaid card or credit card. This has been one of the best things I have found for my kids and I highly recommend it for anyone who has college students or who do not use their phone everyday and do not want to be bind to yearly contracts.

Text Message Motivation for Teens at Boost Up

I recently came across a site called Boostup. The purpose of the site is to help motivate teens to graduate high school who are struggling because of various adversities. It is set up so anyone can send a boost to one of the teens through a variety of digital resources, one option being a text message. I think this is a good example of a positive use of student's digital "toys" in order to help others. Boostup turns the cell phone into a service device, a way to reach out and help others. Schools could set up "help lines" and "mentorship" programs via text messaging with the aid of resources such as Wiffiti (private interactive text messaging board that could be monitored) or Textmarks (create keywords for students and their mentors for private conversations or public displays of motivation and good wishes).

Text messaging could also be set up by teachers/schools as a way to reinforce positive behavior. For example when a student wins awards, solves a difficult problem, or just have a good day in school, the teacher could send out a text message highlighting the child's accomplishment to family, friends, and even commnity members on an approved list. In turn those who receive the text message could send a congratulatory message to the student---creating a positive reinforcment/boost campaign. This might be just what some struggling students need!

Text your own novel or collaborate with others on a story with Textnovel

Many of us have recently read about the popularity of mobile novels (read on a cell phone) in Japan and other countries. In addition, some of us may have also read about a Japanese young woman who wrote a best selling novel entirely through text message on her cell phone. With the aid of Textnovel, your students can now do the same thing! Textnovel is a free and easy way for students to create their own private or public novel through text message. In addition students can also participate with others in creating a collaborative novel on Textnovel. Additonally the novel can be read on cell phones. Anyone can subscribe (as long as your students make it public) to the novel and get updates on a cell phone as it is being written or once it is finished. This could be great for parents! You can use any basic cell phone with textnovel, no need for a smartphone. Since students are using text messaging, they do have to write their entries in 140 characters at a time. As a result, students can write their novels on-the-go. When a thought stirs them, they do not have to have computer or Internet access.

Learning about Genre's
Textnovel allows students to select the genre of novel such as thriller, historical fiction, fantasy, autobiography...etc), then they can text their novel to ADD@TEXTNOVEL.COM. In the message they first type their special code and then the chapter number they would like to add on to such as 197:2, then they are free to type away. It will show up on their private or public (they decide or the teacher can set up the account and decide) account within a minute or less!

A Few Project Ideas
Collaborative class textbooks
(where groups of students are in charge of different chapters). Students in the class could subscribe to the novel and get updates to use for review.

Research Notebooks
students who are doing long-term research projects such as a history term paper, could send their "notes" and "ideas" to a personal Textnovel. Which could be the starting point for their research study. It also documents their thought process.

The Future of Cell Phones in Schools...

You can now purchase a cell phone with a built-in projector. The cost is $373.oo (cheaper than some iPhones!).

There has been some talk for the last few years about the possibility of cell phones having built-in LCD projectors. This could eliminate the need for schools to purchase expensive LCD projectors, instead using their own cell phones as the projection tool. Additionally, teachers and students will always have a projector with them (for conferences or instant presentations).

What else is coming for cell phones?
1) By 2010 (2 years from now) you will be able to hook up to your laptop or desktop computer from anywhere using your cell phone. (Read About It).
How this affects schools:
Students, teachers, and parents could retrieve their school files and documents anytime from anywhere! No worries if you forgot a homework paper, or forgot to hand something in, you could do this via cell phone.

2) By 2010 most cell phones will allow you to store all of your files and documents and share them (similar to a USB Flash hard drive). (Read About It).
How this could affect schools:
Students could share files with each other by beaming them through cell phones (similar to Palm pilots, only now with a basic cell phone). Students could also collect research and data by using their cell phone to store the papers, journal articles, and other documents that they uncover. Always having their research with them.

3) DSL/ Broadband Internet connection will be available on most cell phones by 2010. (Read About It).
How this could affect schools:
Students who do not have Internet access at home ( As of 2007; 78% of U.S. households have a computer, 75% of U.S. households have Internet, while 82% of U.S. citizens have cell phones) could easily access the web for research, course webpages, and class assignments/projects (quickly and efficiently unlike current basic cell phones, where it is still cumbersome and clunky).

4) Cell phone will become a home remote controller. For example, if you forgot to set your coffee pot to turn on or off, you can do that virtually through your cell phone! (Read About It).
How this could affect schools:
Teachers may be able to use this feature to live-stream to their classroom when they are sick or at a conference. They could also use the live-streaming with students who are home sick or unable to make it to the classroom (parents could even watch the lessons so they can better help their children with their class assignments). In addition, teachers could remotely set up their classroom for the next day activities (such as setting the DVD player, or loading their PowerPoint presentation on the classroom computer).

5) Your phone number could become as important as your social security number! You will be able to use it for e-commerce and identification. (Read About It).
How this could affect schools:
Students could use their cell phone as their school ID. Attendance and school purchases could be taken via cell phone. Grades and project feedback could be disseminated via cell phone.

6) Solar-Powered Cell Phones (Read About It)

Soon you will not be confined by electricity or have to worry about charging your cell phone, solar-powered cell phones are coming soon!
How this could affect schools:
Students can truly learn anytime, anywhere, anyplace, at any pace with solar powered cell phones. We know from the Millennial's Rising and Speak Up reports that this is how 21st Century student's like to learn best.

Get ahead and use the right cell phone plans and save.
